Why a big, light box can cost more than a small, heavy one, and how to bring the number down.

Trucks and aircraft fill up by space before they fill up by weight. That is why every courier charges on the higher of two numbers.
The formula
Volumetric weight in kg = length × width × height in cm ÷ 5000. A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box is 4.8 kg volumetric, even if it weighs 1 kg.
Chargeable weight
We compare the actual and the volumetric weight and charge the higher, rounded up to the next half kilo for parcels or the next kilo for part loads.
Bring it down
Choose the smallest box that still leaves room for cushioning. Mailers instead of boxes for soft goods often halve the chargeable weight.
