Cats chew, dogs dig. Here are the plants our team recommends for homes with animals, and the ones to keep out of reach.

Pets and plants can share a home happily, as long as you choose with a little care. Many popular houseplants contain compounds that upset an animal's stomach or irritate the mouth if chewed. Others are entirely harmless. Knowing which is which lets you fill your home with green without worry.
Plants that are safe
The areca palm is our first choice for a pet-friendly floor plant. It is soft, feathery and non-toxic to both cats and dogs. The spider plant is safe too, although cats find its dangling leaves hard to resist, so hang it up if you want it to keep its shape. Boston fern, haworthia, echeveria and the phalaenopsis orchid are all safe choices. Among herbs, holy basil, coriander and mint are harmless in small amounts.
Plants to keep out of reach
Monstera, money plant, peace lily, ZZ plant, snake plant and rubber plant contain sap or crystals that can cause drooling, vomiting or a sore mouth if eaten. They are rarely dangerous, but they are unpleasant. Aloe vera and jade plant can also upset a pet's stomach. You can still grow these plants. Place them on high shelves, in hanging planters or in rooms your pet does not use.
Practical ways to protect both
Give cats a pot of wheatgrass of their own, which often distracts them from everything else. Cover the soil of large pots with pebbles to discourage digging. Choose heavy ceramic planters that are hard to knock over. Avoid chemical leaf shine and pesticide sprays indoors, and use neem oil or plain water instead.
What to do if your pet eats a plant
Remove any pieces from the mouth, offer fresh water and watch for drooling, vomiting or tiredness. Take a photo of the plant and call your vet. Most cases pass quickly, but it is always best to check.
