The right pot gives roots room to grow without leaving them sitting in wet soil. Pot sizes are measured across the top, on the inside.
## Our sizes
Small: 10 to 12 cm across. Suits succulents, herbs, desk plants and young plants up to 25 cm tall.
Medium: 15 to 18 cm across. Suits most houseplants from 30 to 60 cm tall, such as peace lily, pothos and snake plant.
Large: 22 to 28 cm across. Suits floor plants from 70 cm to 1.5 m tall, such as monstera, fiddle leaf fig, areca palm and rubber plant.
## Choosing a new pot
When you repot, choose a pot 2 to 5 cm wider than the current one. A pot that is far too large holds water the roots cannot use, which leads to rot.
## Nursery pot and outer planter
Most of our plants arrive in a plastic nursery pot. You can slip it into a decorative planter of the same size label: a Medium plant fits a Medium planter. Lift the nursery pot out to water, let it drain, then put it back.
## Drainage
If your planter has no hole, keep the plant in its nursery pot inside it. Self-watering planters have a reservoir at the base and suit thirsty plants and busy weeks.
## Materials
Terracotta breathes and dries fast, so it suits succulents and herbs. Glazed ceramic holds moisture longer and suits ferns and tropical plants.
