Four days in the city of superlatives for less than you expect, with the metro, the creek and free shows.

Dubai has a reputation for excess, and you can certainly spend a fortune there. You can also have a very good four days without doing so. The trick is knowing what to pay for and what the city gives away.

Stay near the creek

Hotels in the old districts of Bur Dubai and Deira cost half as much as those downtown or on the beach. They sit on the metro, and the best inexpensive food in the city is at the door.

Use the metro

The driverless metro runs from the airport past almost every major sight. Buy a rechargeable card on arrival. A day of travel costs less than one short taxi ride, and the front carriage has the best view in town.

Cross the creek for one dirham

The wooden abras that shuttle across the creek are the cheapest sightseeing in the Gulf. On the far side lie the gold and spice souks, where looking is free and bargaining is expected.

Know what is free

The dancing fountains run every half hour from 6 pm. The old quarter of Al Fahidi, with its wind towers and small museums, costs nothing to wander. Public beaches are clean, with showers and changing rooms.

Spend on two things

A desert safari with dinner is worth the money, and it is far cheaper booked in advance than at a hotel desk. So is a ticket to the observation deck of the tallest tower. Book the earliest or latest slot of the day, which costs a third less than sunset.

Eat where the city eats

Skip the hotel buffet. Small restaurants in Karama and Deira serve generous biryani, grills and South Indian meals at prices close to home. Tap water is safe to drink.

When to go

May to September is hot, and hotel rates drop by half. If you plan indoor days and evening outings, summer is a real bargain. For good weather at fair prices, choose November or early March.
