What SPF and PA ratings mean, how much to apply and why reapplying matters more than the number on the tube.

Strong sun is part of life in most of India for much of the year. Sunscreen is one of the simplest additions to a daily skin routine, yet the labels can be confusing. Here is what the terms mean.
SPF and PA in plain words
SPF tells you about protection from UVB rays, the ones linked to sunburn. The PA rating, shown with plus signs, tells you about UVA protection. For everyday use many people choose a broad spectrum product with SPF 30 or higher.
How much and how often
Most of us apply too little. A common guide is two finger lengths for the face and neck. Apply it about fifteen minutes before you step out, and reapply every two to three hours when you are outdoors, or after sweating or swimming.
Pick a texture you will actually use
Gels and light fluids tend to feel comfortable in humid weather and on oily skin. Creams suit drier skin. The best sunscreen is the one you are happy to wear every day.
Do not rely on sunscreen alone
Shade, a hat, sunglasses and covered clothing all help, especially between late morning and mid afternoon.
If you have sensitive skin or a skin condition, patch test a new product first. For advice that fits your own skin, speak to a Medora pharmacist or your doctor.
