A simple checklist of what to keep in the box, where to store it and how often to check it.

A first aid kit is one of those things you only think about when you need it. Putting one together takes less than an hour, and it means small cuts, scrapes and bumps can be handled calmly at home.

What to keep in the box

Start with the basics: adhesive bandages in a few sizes, sterile gauze, a crepe bandage, medical tape, antiseptic liquid, cotton, a pair of small scissors and tweezers. Add a digital thermometer, a few sachets of ORS and a pair of disposable gloves.

Add what your family needs

Every home is different. If you have small children, keep child-friendly bandages and a note of the paediatrician's number. If someone has a known allergy or a long-term condition, keep their regular supplies in the same place and write the details on a card inside the lid.

Store it where everyone can find it

Choose a cool, dry shelf that adults can reach quickly and children cannot. The bathroom is usually too humid. Tell everyone at home, including grandparents and helpers, where the kit lives.

Check it twice a year

Set a reminder every six months. Replace anything that is used up, opened or past its expiry date, and make sure the thermometer battery still works.

A home kit is for minor problems only. For anything serious, call emergency services. For advice that fits your own family, speak to a Medora pharmacist or your doctor.
