Not black, not grey. How a single ink colour became the backbone of the collection.
Sumi is the ink of brush calligraphy: pine soot bound with glue, ground on a stone with water. Depending on how much water you add it runs from deep black to a pale smoke.
One colour, many depths
We dye our sumi pieces in three strengths. The trench is the darkest, the merino turtleneck sits in the middle, the pleated skirt is the lightest. Worn together they read as one colour with depth, not as a uniform.
Against white
Every sumi piece is designed to sit beside shiro, our undyed white. The contrast is the whole collection in two colours.
And one seal
The vermilion of the hanko seal is the only bright colour we use, and only once per outfit.
