The piece

A long, single-breasted trench in sumi-black Bishu wool gabardine, cut with a dropped shoulder and a hidden placket so the front reads as one clean line.

A deep back vent lets it move when you walk; the collar stands up against the wind and folds flat when it does not. Wear it over everything on the rail.

Cloth & care

Wool gabardine woven at a family mill in Bishu, Aichi. Cupro lining. Horn buttons.

Dry clean only, rarely. Brush after wearing and hang on a broad hanger.

01Wear it open with the belt tied behind so the front falls straight.
02Over a heavy knit, size as normal; over a shirt only, size down for a closer line.
03Let the hem sit at mid-calf with a wide trouser, or just above the ankle with a column dress.
04One vermilion accent at most: a scarf, a bag or the seal edit coat underneath.

Mill: Kisogawa Weaving Works
Region: Bishu, Aichi, Japan
Process: Woven on 1960s shuttle looms at a third of modern speed, then washed in soft river water and dried flat.

The mill has woven wool beside the Kiso river for four generations. The slow looms leave a dense, supple cloth that holds the long line of the trench for years.

The wool is dense but it swings when you walk. I wear it over everything from October to March.
