A strip of paper, a ruler and five minutes. Elena Marlowe explains how to measure a finger properly, and what to do when it is a surprise.
By Elena Marlowe, founder and head goldsmith.
A ring that fits should slide on easily and need a small, firm tug to come off over the knuckle. Getting there is simpler than most people expect. You do not need a special tool, though if you would like one we will post you a plastic sizer for free.
The paper method
Cut a strip of paper about a centimetre wide. Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but not tight, and mark where the end overlaps. Lay the strip flat and measure to the mark in millimetres. That number is the circumference of your finger, and our ring size guide turns it into a US size.
Do it three times. If you get three different answers, take the largest.
Measure at the right moment
Fingers change through the day. They are smallest first thing in the morning and when you are cold, and largest in the evening, after exercise and in hot weather. Measure at the end of an ordinary day, at room temperature, and you will land in the middle.
Mind the knuckle
If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size between the two. The ring has to pass the knuckle, but it should not spin once it is on.
If you are between sizes, go up. It is easier to make a ring smaller than larger.
Wide bands fit tighter
A band wider than about 5 mm covers more of the finger and feels a size smaller than a fine one. For wide rings, go up half a size. For a stack of three or more slim bands worn together, do the same.
When it is a surprise
Borrow a ring they already wear on the same finger and measure straight across the inside, edge to edge. That inner diameter is in our guide too. If you cannot borrow one, press it into a bar of soap and measure the impression. Failing all that, guess: the most common size we make is a 6 or 7.
And do not worry about getting it exactly right. We resize every Amarelle ring free of charge in the first 60 days, and it takes us less than a week.
