Most bathroom regrets come from choosing the tiles first. Here is the order that saves money and rework.

A bathroom is the most technical room in a home, and the order in which you decide things matters more than any single choice.

Start with the layout

Fix the positions of the WC, basin and shower before anything else. The WC goes closest to the soil stack, the shower furthest from the door, and the basin where you see it first.

Then choose what goes in the wall

Concealed cisterns, diverters and wall-mounted taps all need their bodies set into the wall before plastering. Choose these fittings early, because they decide where the pipes run.

Check your pressure

A rain shower needs 1 bar and a shower panel 1.5 bar. If you are fed from an overhead tank, plan for a pressure pump now, not after the tiles are up.

Tiles and finishes last

Once the fittings are fixed, pick one metal finish and carry it through taps, shower, accessories and even the flush plate.

A simple rule

Spend on what is hard to change: the things inside the wall. Mirrors and accessories can always be upgraded later.
