Complimentary de-pilling in a knit's first year

Autumn / Winter · The Cashmere Issue

Two-ply cashmere, combed by hand and knitted slowly in our Larkhaven studio. Every piece carries its yarn story, and every piece can come back to be mended.

The Halvard way

So we make fewer, better pieces: two-ply yarn that resists pilling, panels knitted to shape so seams lie flat, and a Care Studio that darns, de-pills and re-knits for as long as you own them.

  1. I

    Traceable fibre

Cashmere bought direct from herding cooperatives, with the origin on every page.

  2. II

    Fully fashioned

Panels knitted to shape, not cut from cloth, so nothing is wasted and seams lie flat.

  3. III

    Mended for life

Every knit can come back to the Care Studio, however old.

From fibre to finish

I

Combed

Each spring, herders on the Mongolian plateau comb the soft undercoat by hand as the goats moult. Only fibre under 15.5 microns is kept.

II

Spun

The down is dehaired, spun and twisted into two-ply yarn, so the finished knit holds its shape and resists pilling.

III

Knitted

In the Knit Room every panel is knitted to shape on the frame, then linked stitch by stitch so the seams lie flat.

IV

Finished

Each piece is washed in soft water, pressed, checked by hand and folded into tissue. Then it is yours, for life.

IVThe Camel Edit

Kind words

Worn, loved, mended

The camel roll-neck is the softest thing I own. Two winters in and it still looks new, and the repair service brought back a cuff I had worn through.

House notes

  1. I

    Fold, never hang

Hangers stretch shoulders. Fold your knits and keep them in a drawer with cedar.

  2. II

    Rest between wears

Give cashmere a day off. The fibres relax and the knit returns to shape on its own.

  3. III

    Wash less, wash cool

Every five or six wears, in cool water with wool soap. Roll it in a towel, dry it flat.

  4. IV

    Mend, don't replace

A darn, a new cuff or a re-block turns a tired knit into a favourite again. That is what the Care Studio is for.

From the studio

Care, pilling, sizing and monograms. If yours is not here, the studio replies within a working day.

A little pilling in the first weeks is loose short fibres working their way out; it is not a fault. Lift them with a cashmere comb, or send the knit to our Care Studio for a free de-pill in its first year.
