Complimentary de-pilling in a knit's first year

Est. 2009 · Larkhaven, Vermont

The studio

Halvard began with one hand frame in a converted wool store and a simple promise: make nothing we would not mend. Today we are a small studio of knitters, linkers and menders in Larkhaven, buying cashmere direct from herding cooperatives and knitting crews, roll-necks, cardigans and coats in small runs.

I

Traceable fibre

Cashmere combed by hand on the Mongolian plateau and bought direct from the herders, with the origin on every product page.

II

Small runs

We knit each style in small numbers and re-knit the ones you ask for, instead of chasing a season.

III

Mended in-house

Our Care Studio darns, de-pills, re-blocks and re-knits every Halvard piece, however old.

How a knit is made

  1. I

    Comb

Every spring the herders comb the soft undercoat by hand as the goats moult.

  2. II

    Spin

The fibre is dehaired and spun into two-ply yarn in our undyed oatmeal, camel and charcoal.

  3. III

    Knit

Panels are knitted to shape on the frame, then linked by hand so every seam lies flat.

  4. IV

    Mend

Send it back for a darn, a new cuff or a re-block. Good knits outlast their first winter by decades.
