The deadlift is the simplest lift in the gym and the one people fear most. Here is how we teach it.
Picking a weight up off the floor is something you already do every day. The deadlift only asks you to do it well.
Set up the same way every time
Feet under your hips, bar over the middle of your foot. Hinge back, take your grip just outside your legs and bring your shins to the bar without moving it.
Squeeze before you pull
Take the slack out of the bar until you hear it click against the plates. Your chest lifts, your back tightens and only then do you push the floor away.
Start lighter than you think
We start most members with the bar raised on blocks and add weight only when ten good repetitions look identical. Progress comes quickly after that.
