Your first body wax: what to expect, start to finish

How long the hair should be, what it actually feels like and what to do for the two days after.

Most men put off a first wax for years and then wonder why they waited. Here is the honest version of what happens.

Before the visit

Hair should be about half a centimetre long, roughly two weeks of growth. Shorter and the wax cannot grip; much longer and we will trim first. Shower beforehand, skip heavy moisturiser and do not exfoliate on the day.

During

We use low-temperature wax, which melts at a lower heat and grips the hair rather than the skin. Chest and stomach sting more than arms and legs. Each pull lasts a second. A full back takes about fifteen minutes.

After

Expect some redness for a few hours. For the next 24 hours avoid the gym, hot showers, swimming and tight synthetic clothing. From day three, exfoliate gently twice a week to keep ingrown hairs away.

How often

Every four to five weeks. Hair grows back finer and sparser with each session, and it hurts noticeably less by the third.
