A beard is the cheapest way to change the shape of your face. The rule is simple: add length where your face is short and width where it is narrow.
Round faces
Keep the sides tight and leave more length at the chin. An angular cheek line helps.
Long faces
Do the opposite. Fuller sides, shorter chin, and avoid pointed shapes.
Square faces
You already have the jaw. Keep everything short and even, and soften the corners slightly.
The neckline
This is where most home trims go wrong. The line sits one to two fingers above the Adam's apple and curves up towards the ears. Higher than that and the beard looks like a chin strap.
Ask your professional to set the lines once. After that a weekly tidy with a trimmer is enough between visits.
