How to check a toy is safe in 30 seconds
Five quick checks every parent can do in the shop, before anything goes near small mouths.
Most toy accidents are avoidable with a few quick checks.
The tube test
If a part fits through a toilet-roll tube, it's a choking risk for under-3s.
Check the finish
Look for non-toxic, water-based paints. Peeling paint or a strong chemical smell is a no.
Look for the mark
In India, toys must carry the BIS ISI mark (IS 9873). If it isn't there, don't buy it.
Batteries locked away
Button batteries must be behind a screwed-shut cover.
Strings and cords
Anything over 30 cm is a strangling risk for babies. Keep cot toys short and secure.
