The house reef: a short guide

The reef in front of the north jetty has been a no-take zone since the resort opened, and it shows. Enter from the ladder at the third villa and drift left with the current.

In the first fifty metres you will see parrotfish, butterflyfish and, in the mornings, a hawksbill turtle or two feeding on sponge. Where the reef drops away to blue, look out rather than down: that is where the reef sharks patrol.

Go before ten, when the water is flat and the light comes in sideways. Do not stand on anything, and do not touch. The coral grows a centimetre a year.
