Unheld
A pause between platforms
Forty-one frames made on the 06:12 slow local, when the city has not yet decided who it is for the day.
Unheld started as a dare to myself: one roll a morning, for a whole monsoon, on the same train. No flash, no asking, no second takes. What came back was not a portrait of commuters but of the half-second before people arrange their faces.
The edit is brutal on purpose. Of 1,100 frames, 41 survived. Every one of them has motion in it somewhere, a sleeve, a rail, a reflection that will not sit still. I printed the series large and grainy so the blur reads as weather rather than mistake.
The train is the only room in the city where nobody is performing.
Unheld was first shown as a 9-metre wall of work prints at the studio in March 2025, and is now available as a numbered edition.
