How to make cut flowers last

Five small habits that turn a five-day bouquet into a ten-day one. No aspirin, no pennies, no myths.

Hello flower friend. Every bouquet we send is guaranteed fresh for five days, but with a little care most will go well past that. Here is what we do in the studio.

Cut, then cut again

Trim two centimetres off every stem at an angle before the flowers go in water. A slanted cut drinks more than a flat one. Repeat every two or three days.

Strip the lower leaves

Any leaf sitting below the waterline will rot and feed bacteria. Bare stems in the vase, leaves above it.

Clean water does more than any flower food ever will.

Change the water

Fresh, cool water every other day, and rinse the vase while you are at it. If the water looks cloudy, you are already a day late.

Pick the right spot

Keep the vase away from radiators, direct sun and the fruit bowl. Ripening fruit gives off a gas that makes petals drop early.

Edit as you go

Pull out anything that fades and move the rest to a smaller vase. A bud vase with the last three stems is still a bouquet.
