Watercolour has a reputation for being difficult. Mostly it is the wrong paper. Here is what to buy and what to skip.
Paint
A set of twelve student tubes is enough to mix almost any colour. Squeeze a little of each onto a plate and let it dry. You can re-wet it for weeks.
Brushes
You need three round brushes: a small one for detail, a medium one for most work and a large one for washes. Synthetic hair is affordable and holds a good point.
Paper
This is where to spend. Use paper of at least 140 gsm, and 300 gsm if you like a lot of water. Thin paper buckles and makes every wash look muddy.
A waterproof pen
Pigment fineliners let you draw first and paint over the lines without smudging.
First exercise
Paint a row of squares, each with a little more water than the last. You will learn more about your paints in ten minutes than from any video.
