Why a polarised lens cuts glare off water and roads, and when you might not want one.

Light reflecting off flat surfaces like water, snow and tarmac becomes horizontally polarised. A polarised lens contains a vertical filter that blocks that glare.
The result is sharper contrast and less squinting. The trade-off: some phone and car screens can look dark through them.
