West End
Victorian mansions, quiet terraces and the best sunset in the city.
A historic district of grand brick and clapboard houses above the Fore River, anchored by the Western Promenade.
The West End was built by the city's merchant families in the decades after the Great Fire of 1866, and it still reads like an architecture textbook: Italianate villas, Queen Anne turrets, Federal brick and the occasional Shingle Style surprise.
Day to day it is a residential, walkable neighbourhood. Longfellow Square and Congress Street are a few minutes away for cafes, bakeries and the independent cinema, while the Western Promenade offers a long, level walk with views to the White Mountains.
Houses here rarely come to the open market, and when they do they tend to be larger single-family homes or elegant apartments within converted mansions.
