Dressing for mehendi: sleeves, skirts and stains

Henna takes hours to dry. Here is how to dress so you are comfortable while it does.

Mehendi is the most relaxed function and the one people dress worst for, because they forget they will not be able to use their hands.

Sleeves first. Bridal henna often runs to the elbow, so choose short sleeves or ones that push up and stay up. Avoid tight cuffs.

Then the skirt. A lehenga you have to lift to walk is a problem when your palms are wet. A sharara, a kurta set or a lighter lehenga that clears the floor is better.

Colour. Green is traditional and hides the odd smudge, but pink, orange and yellow all photograph well against henna. White does not forgive.

Finally, jewellery. Put bangles on after the henna has dried, not before, and choose earrings over rings.
