Base, mid, shell. The three layers, the right order, and when to unzip everything and just enjoy the rain.
Layering is the one skill that makes any jacket work harder. Here is the short version.
The base
Start with a tee or thin knit that sits close and dries fast. Cotton is fine in the city; merino is better if it is cold and wet.
The mid
A hoodie or fleece traps heat. It should fit easy, not tight, so air can sit between layers.
Base close, mid roomy, shell roomiest.
The shell
Match the shell to the forecast: water-resistant for drizzle, waterproof for downpours, windproof for the waterfront. Size up one if you are stacking a thick mid.
When to unzip
If you are sweating at the bus stop, open the pit zips and drop the hood. Comfortable beats buttoned-up every time.
