Skin follows a daily rhythm. By day it is occupied with defence against light, heat and pollution. At night, its priorities shift towards renewal.
More water is lost at night
Studies of skin's daily rhythm show that water loss through the surface rises in the evening and overnight. This is why skin can feel drier on waking, and why a slightly richer cream makes sense as the last step before bed.
A good time for actives
Ingredients such as bakuchiol and exfoliating acids are best used in the evening, away from sunlight. Use them on separate nights and follow with a comforting moisturiser.
Sleep itself matters
No cream replaces rest. Seven to eight hours, a cool room and a clean pillowcase do a great deal for how skin looks in the morning.
If you change only one thing, make it this: never go to bed without cleansing and moisturising, however late it is.
