Why a polarised lens cuts glare off water and snow, and when you might not want one.

Light reflecting off flat surfaces like water, snow and wet roads becomes horizontally polarised. A polarised lens contains a vertical filter that blocks that glare.
The result is sharper contrast and less squinting, which matters in the low, long light of a northern summer. The trade-off: some phone and car screens can look dark through them.
