Starting a child on chapter books
The jump from picture books to chapters is the hardest one. Six books that make it easier.
Somewhere around six or seven, children are ready for chapters but not for long pages of grey text. The trick is books with short chapters, big type and something funny on every page.
Series help
The Tiffin Box Detectives books are built for this: one mystery, ten chapters, pictures every few pages. Finishing one makes a child want the next.
Read the first chapter together
Then stop. Leave the book where they can find it.
Let them reread
Rereading is not wasted time. It is how fluency grows.
