A hot, cooked lunch is often the reason a child comes to school at all.
6,400 reached this yearWhy this matters
At 5:30 every morning the burners in our Hebbal kitchen are already lit. By 11, forty steel drums of rice, sambar and seasonal vegetables are loaded into two vans and driven to 38 government primary schools between Yelahanka and Kodigehalli.
For many of the children we feed, it is the one full meal of the day. Head teachers tell us attendance on Mondays — the day after the weekend without school lunch — used to be the lowest of the week. Since the meal arrived, it is now the highest.
Every ₹500 covers one child's lunches for a school month: twenty-two plates, cooked by women from the same neighbourhoods, under a nutrition plan written with a paediatric dietitian at a Bengaluru teaching hospital.
