In the villages on Bengaluru's northern edge, the steepest drop in school attendance happens between Class 8 and Class 10. The high school is further away, the bus is unreliable, and a girl at home is useful.
Our scholarships cover the costs a family can see — fees, two uniforms, books, a school bag — and the ones it can't: a bicycle for the six-kilometre ride, and an evening learning centre with tutors who were once scholars themselves.
We stay with each girl until she finishes Class 12, and with her family through the conversations about college, work and marriage that decide whether she does.
