Bengaluru sees a rise in dengue cases every monsoon. Most people recover at home with rest, fluids and paracetamol. Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin, which can worsen bleeding.
The risky phase usually comes as the fever falls, between day 3 and day 7. Watch for persistent vomiting, severe stomach pain, bleeding gums, black stools, drowsiness or restlessness.
If any of these appear, come to the emergency department. A platelet count alone does not decide admission; your doctor looks at the whole picture, including blood pressure and haematocrit.
Prevention still works best: empty standing water around your home every week and use repellent during the day, when the Aedes mosquito bites.
