Where to put bookshelf speakers

Ear height, a hand-span from the wall and a small toe-in. Three moves that change everything.

The short version

Start with the room, not the speaker. Measure roughly, note where people sit, and notice the hard surfaces: glass, tile and bare walls brighten sound, while rugs, curtains and sofas soften it.

Small changes make the biggest difference. Raise speakers to ear height, keep them a hand-span from the wall and angle them slightly towards your favourite seat.
