The grid is a promise
Swiss design taught us that a grid is not a cage. It is a promise to the reader that things are where they expect them.

(By the Northform studio)
When we start a site we draw the grid before we draw anything else, the way an architect fixes the column spacing before the rooms.
Twelve columns, many layouts
A 12-column grid divides into halves, thirds, quarters and sixths, which gives you variety without chaos.
Break it on purpose
The moments that feel exciting, an image bleeding off the edge or a headline across the gutter, only work because everything else lines up.
Keep it in code
Our grids live in CSS variables so that what the designer drew is exactly what the browser renders.
