In a pared-back wardrobe the fabric does the talking. Here is what to feel for before you buy.

When a garment has no logos, prints or trims to hide behind, the fabric becomes the whole story. It decides how a piece drapes, how it ages and how it feels at the end of a long day.
Natural fibres first
Wool, cashmere, cotton, linen and silk breathe, soften with wear and can be repaired. Blends have their place, but a high share of natural fibre is a good sign that a piece is made to last.
Weight and weave
Hold the fabric up to the light and feel its weight in your hand. A dense, even weave keeps its shape; a thin, loose one tends to bag and pill after a few washes.
The quiet luxury of texture
Ribbed knits, brushed twills and washed silks add depth to a neutral palette without adding noise. Mix two or three textures in one outfit and even the simplest colours feel considered.
