Light in layers
A single ceiling light makes a room feel flat, however beautiful the fitting. Calm evenings come from several softer sources at different heights: a floor lamp beside the sofa, a table lamp on a sideboard, a small light on a shelf.
Each one creates its own pool of warmth, and together they turn one bright room into several quiet corners. Choose warm bulbs around 2700 K and use dimmers wherever you can, so the room can shift from dinner to reading to winding down.
Let materials catch the light
Low, side-on light brings out the grain in wood and the texture in linen and wool. Place a lamp near a favourite piece and watch how its surface changes through the evening.
